On The Spot: Monika Leas, Crocus Founder

Monica (Moni) Leas, founder and former owner of Crocus Dental Technology, continues her service to the merged Renstrom – Crocus team as a senior technician providing continuing relationships with Crocus clients and providing the Renstrom – Crocus staff technical consulting and staff training.

Moni received her initial dental technology training in Germany. After marrying and moving to Minnesota in the early 60’s she worked as a crown and bridge lab technician at several dental labs while her husband attended college. Her first job in Minnesota was with Zibel Dental in Duluth, followed by a period of time as a chair-side assistant and a single person lab for a Duluth dentist. After several years in Duluth, she worked as a crown and bridge technician with Worenson Polzine Dental in Mankato, MN.

Following her husband’s graduation in 1975, they moved to St. Paul where she interviewed with several dental labs. Moni accepted an offer of employment as a crown and bridge technician with Bob Renstrom, Randy and Rick’s father, because she appreciated his dedication to producing a quality product.

After working with Bob Renstrom for 12 years, where she eventually became head of the metal department as well as becoming proficient in ceramics, she decided to attempt a partnership in a small two-person lab. In 1980, emphasizing her belief in a quality education, Moni became a Certified Dental Technician in Crown and Bridge and Ceramics.

During her attempted partnership she realized she needed to run her own lab in order to pursue her goal of working closely with dentists to provide a quality product. Moni founded Crocus Dental Technology in 1990 as a single person lab. The workload and client base grew because of her dedication to working closely with doctors, providing a quality product, and her ability to attract quality technicians have maintained close working relationships since the founding of Crocus, and the resulting merger of the two labs has strengthened both of them by combining the strongest capabilities of both labs in the same location.

Moni’s continued consulting with the merged Renstrom – Crocus labs and technicians highlights her belief in quality initial training and continuing education for technicians as a key to providing a quality fixed restorative product. Moni served for several years as the Education Chairperson of the Minnesota Dental Laboratory Association, and advised several local technical colleges on their dental technology course offerings.

Additionally, Moni strongly believes in working closely with dentists to consult and advise regarding patient fixed restorative needs before they become costly problems, that one should never promise more than can be delivered, that delivery must be on time, and that the final keys to quality products are quality technicians.
